Do any of you have a history of cutting or other forms of self-harm as a result of dealing with P? I have no insurance and I have given up trying hydro-cortisone because it is expensive and those little tubes don't last long. It is ironic that I cut when I am feeling upset about my skin, because I get the rash everywhere a wound tries to heal. Today, I started my first day of work in 8 months, and my manager told me I had to keep my sleeves down so that customers don't question the healthy environment of the candy store, and so the health inspector doesn't mark her off for anything. This was extremely disturbing and upsetting and I am both stressed and depressed about it. Any insight or comments, whether they are supportive or negative, are welcome.

My comment is congratulations on starting work. Lots of people out of work. I'd just lower my sleeves and deal with it. Some people have to take out nose rings to work, or wear a tie. Part of life. We have flaky skin. People don't want it in their food. Even my sister! Can I really blame her? If too many of MY flakes fall in my OWN coffee I won't drink it. So give your boss a break.

As for the cutting, you need help to stop that. Sure it is bad for your skin but it is worse for your psyche. Psychiatrist, psychologist, any doctor, really. Go tell an expert about that and get some treatment. Lots of us scratch til it bleeds, on purpose. That is a lot like cutting, maybe. But still. Talk to a doctor or nurse about that. Not what you want to be doing. Met an "ex-cutter" once. Wish I remembered where, or had asked how she stopped. Point is she managed to stop. With help, you can too.
Kudos to you for starting work. As I shared in my earlier post, I have years of experience as a social worker. Self-injury is the way you are coping, and as you know the cycle is a vicious one. I am not sure your location, but I highly suggest you look into a community based agency that has a sliding fee scale. I am guessing you may have received assistance for this in the past? Regardless, if you are identifying there is a negative cycle, it means you recognize your coping is not working for you. The question is, are you ready to stop and break it? If so, seek out someone who can support you where you are at, and when you are in need. Best of luck-take care.
thank you both for the congrats. To Chuck: if you are scratching until it bleeds, of course that is self harm, a form of it at least, and I wish I was in a position to seek professional treatment, but money is a huge deal, and I am currently more worried about my 53 year old father who has no insurance. After talking with my mom and some friends on facebook, I feel a little better about just dealing with it, but I almost take pride in showing it off, like it makes me better than others because I have to deal with it.
To Jacki- I have not actually sought a cheap alternative to the money draining mental care system in the past, I have several outstanding bills though, and I think they restrict me from seeking any additional help. I have put my father through hell with this and I wish more than anything the clear his credit of my stupidity. I am in Colorado Springs, and I am currently trying to apply for disability through social security, but I doubt i qualify. I feel like i have been ready to break the cycle for 7 years now, since I started, but I don't think the treatment I have received has been effective, there are too many things to worry about, like money, and everyone thinks I am crazy when I tell them how I wish I was living. Thanks for the input!
This is a long shot, but have you tried this place? They list that they have a sliding scale, which means you pay what you can afford. When I worked in an agency, we had people paying as low as $1 a session. Again, you have to want the change. Take care....try your local phone book or just google sliding scale mental health providers in your town. When I just searched, there are many agenies listed in Colorado Springs, but you know which has the better reputation, location, etc. Take care!!
