Hi - I am a 60 year old woman and I have had psoriasis for over 20 years. I am currently having the worst flare-up ever-on my legs, arms, stomach etc. I have tried all of the topicals, UVB and my doctor wants to put me on methotrexate. I am scared to death of the side effects and it seems that  there are so many bad experiences posted.  I know that people are more likely to post about negative experiences but I would love to here from anyone who has had a good result with minimal side effects?

Survived 20 years (!) on methotrexate with decent results and no known side effects. Results vary, but it is still commonly used for psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, among other diseases, so it must be helping some people! Plus, it is cheap compared to other options. Check with your doctor before consuming any alcohol while on methotrexate.

Sorry to hear about your psoriasis and good luck!

Thanks Michael-Nice to hear a positive report. Do you take folic acid supplements? Some things I have read suggest this.
I did not but understand it can help those who get stomach upset, etc.
what the effect of methorexate...i just eat this methorexate 2 week
I have taken it two different times and both time had to take folic acid with it....i dont have anything positive or negative to say about it really...the first time it didnt work but did make me very sick to my stomach...the second time i took it i had a surgery gone bad at the same time so i cant tell you for sure if some of the complications were due to metho or the surgery gone bad.....but i can tell you it always made me have an upset stomch even with the folic acid so i took phenergan and zofran to offset that......also....the last two biologically drugs they have put me on they also wanted to combine it with metho to "make the biologic last longer"....good luck...keep us posted!!!!

So I saw my derm and it turns out that I have blood in my urine-symptom of a u.t.i. and she can't start me until I clear and also gets my urologist's blessing for the methotrexate. I have frequent u.t.i.'s so now I am wondering whether they will increase even more on the methotrexate which would really be awful. The only plus side to all of this is that it may open the door to treatment on biologics which seem to have less potential side effects. Nothing is ever simple!!!
Hello Nita,
I've been on methotrexate in the past about 5-6 years ago. I had no side effects from this drug at all. It also totally cleared up my P. First time I was able to wear shorts in years. Then my dermatologist said I had reached the limit per mg per lifetime so they had to take me off it or I could have a liver biopsy. Well I went off and it came back worse then ever. I then started Embrel which did nothing for me. Tried it for 8 months. Then I went to a rheumatologist for my PA. She told me I could go back on methotrexate. I was very excited to hear this. She said they had patients on it for over 25 years. So I was able to start it just 2 weeks ago. I take 6 pills every Thurs. I to am having a terrible flare up right now. This flare up was caused by a cortisone shot they gave me 3 weeks ago in my lower back/hip area for my PA. Apparently you can get bad steroid flare ups from steroid shots! I did not know this and my P is terrible! Pretty much covered. I've never had it like this. So I'm really hoping the methotrexate will work like it did before! I hope it works for you like it did for me! I guess I will let you know how it does this time. They say to give it 12 weeks at least.
Oh I to have to take folic acid once a day. I take it every other day.... lol. For me it's the folic acid that can upset my stomach. You to should be on that? Ask your doc. Methotrexate can really lower your iron. Also my doc says to take vit D.
I haven't really had any negative side effects, except a bit of hair loss..nothing major though. But it hasn't really helped me either...been on it 2 mths for psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis
I was on that for years and had to watch my Liver count. So they finally took me off of it and im only on Predniscone. I seem better on it alone.
I agree sharon I was much on 40mg of prednisone a day, but it started to cause my blood pressure to sky rocket so i had to go off it...:(

what dose of prednisone are you on, out of curiosity.
Hi Kasandra, Im only on 5mg of Predniscone. Im amazed on how I feel with just alittle meds.
