I found this information online regarding PML and how Raptiva may play a part: PML is a neurological disorder caused by the JC virus, the latter destroying the nerve cell protecting substance myelin. Up to 85 percent of adults carry the JC Virus, but it only becomes active when the immune system is severely oppressed. PML leads to a decline in neurologic function and eventually death, and no preventative therapy or cure currently exists.

With that said, I wonder if they can identify adults carrying the JC virus.

Take a look at these websites.

Hi Lynda,

Well that just stinks! Have they done a risk analysis? I went online and two patients that I saw were up in age and had weakened immune systems. I'm certainly no proponent of a drug that has a high potential to kill me but I would analyze my own personal risk. I wonder what the ratio is for people taking the drug and those who have died. Being that there is only three, one could rationalize that the percent chance of death would be very low. With that said, you don't want to be a part of that small percent. What other meds have you tried? Enbrel brought me great success. I did the UVB light, Methotrexate and enough steroids to give me a full beard (JUST kidding but there is a whisker or two) but none of them worked. How's your climate? Here it is so dry. Is the climate and humidity not good to you in L.A.? Is your affected area centralized or does it take free reign of your entire body? Mine was everywhere except for my hands and feet and covered over 85 percent of my surface. Now I just have a few scatter-brained lesions that don't realize they need to go! Just a sidenote...When they find a cure, I'm heading out to LA to see what kind of trouble we can get into:) Later gator!
